How was your Merdeka day? Me? Tiring.
This morning I was involved in the Merdeka parade cawangan Negeri Sembilan. 50 bucks if you spotted me there. Afternoon was spent with a host of Merdeka documentaries, Anakku Sazali (P. Ramlee is a genius!) and well... more Merdeka celebrations on TV.
The reason for my tiredness was because I spent last night at Dataran Merdeka to wait till midnight with Pak Lah and the gang. I'm surprised myself that I made the journey there. I was there more on historical nostalgia more than anything else. You know me. I thought that maybe one day I can tell my grandchildren, hey grandpops was there on the 50th Merdeka celebration. It turned out I can hardly tell them anything because there were thousands and I mean THOUSANDS of people there. The only time I've seen more people crowded into one place was during New Year of 2000.
The place was so jammed pack with people the only thing you could see were pimples and bad hairdos. Oh yeah, let's not talk about the smell too. I can hardly see anything and spent most of my time there waiting for the person in front of me to move forward.
I also noticed that probably half of the people there were not even Malaysians themselves. There were a lot of foreigners and when I say foreigners, I don't mean the camera-totting Japanese tourist or the pensioners from Britain. These foreigners were probably more, emmm ex-pats if I can call them that?
So there I was, sweating, my feet were killing me and the smell of Tancho + sweat was strong in the air. Add to that, there were no fireworks when the clock at the Sultan Abdul Samad building struck midnight. There was only the cry of Merdeka! by you-know-who that told me that it was independence day. Omigod, how can you celebrate Merdeka without the fireworks? That's like masak lemak without the cili or teh without the buih tarik or sex without the ..... oh well you get the picture.
I could see the crowd was clearly unhappy because seeing that no fireworks was in sight, people were leaving by the droves just minutes after midnight. Despite the huge crowd and closure of the major roads, kudos to the LRT crew who were well prepared for the mob by having their staff controlling the flow of human traffic there. They even had a medical crew on standby too. I had no complaints using the LRT to get there because it was smooth sailing all the way despite the high volume of commuters last night.
In the end, my feet hurts, my body was aching and my body smelled of cigarettes + sweat + cheap perfume. Oh, and no fireworks too. So I ended up with nothing to tell to my future grandchildren. Pity them.
Oh well, there's always the Centenary Merdeka eh?
