Truth

Kevin Costner's closing statement to the jury in JFK has got to go down as one of the finest performances in movie history. It's a wonder why he wasn't even nominated for an Oscar for that role. 15 years on, JFK still amazes me since I first watched it eons ago on video tape. In a way, it awoken the young me to realise that we can't just accept what Big Brother tells us whole-heartedly. Dangerous words for my line of work but I've realised that. I love the caption in the closing credits:

The past is prologue. Dedicated to the young, in whose spirit the search for truth marches on.

I used to think that way. Searching for truth, freedom and all that shabang. As idealistic as it may sound, in this great big world of ours, the truth is something we sometimes just dream of. We've lost our innocence. When there's food to be put on the table. When there's bills to pay. The minute someone tells us what to do.
And that is the awful truth.

Syoknya Raya

Hari Raya dah habis.

*Sigh*

Hari ni dah masuk ofis balik. Hmmm. Boleh tahan meriah gak Raya tahun ni. Aku ingatkan hambar. Rupanya aku salah.

Banyak kelainan sedikit aku rasa untuk Raya tahun ni. Tahun ni rekod lah paling banyak aku terima SMS raya daripada kengkawan. Yang tak tahan tu, member-member yang aku dah lama tak kontek. Ingat gak korang kat aku ye. Terharu saye.

Macam-macam pesen sms ada. Pantun tu normal lah. Lawak Aiman tak kisah tu dah nak muak aku dengar. Yang paling aku suka Fung hantar aku pantun dia buat sendiri. Macam gampang bunyinya. Tergelak aku sesorang baca teks dia.

Lain dari tu, aku rasa janggal sedikit ada tangan ekstra aku nak salam kat rumah di pagi Raya. Bang Farez sempoi je. Dia tak banyak cakap. Elok lah tu. Aku pun bukan jenis banyak cakap pun. Ye ke?

Tahun ni pun aku pegi beraya kat kampung orang. Ok gak sekali sekala tengok tempat orang. Asyik beraya kat Seremban je tak berkembang otak aku ni. Baru lah globalisasi namanya.

Lagi apa yek? Oh ye...sepupu-sepupu aku yang aku selalu buli tu dah besar panjang dah. Sorang tu siap dah baligh lagi. Suara dah setat garau. Boleh lawan lah suara ekzos aku ni ye..hehe.

Aku suka Hari Raya. Walaupun pernah ada ketikanya aku tak menunggu sangat Hari Raya, tahun ni aku happy. Mungkin aku dah beraman dengan dunia ni kot. Mungkin sebab lain. Tapi aku tak sabar Raya tahun depan. Kan ku tunggu nan Syawal tiba.

Saya rasa saya mabuk ketupat kot.

Satu hari menjelang Raya

Malam tadi aku termimpi arwah Tok Chik aku. Dah lama rasanya aku tak terkenangkan dia. Jadi selalunya bila aku mimpi dia, aku suka percaya yang itu tanda dia nak ingatkan aku. Karut, kan?

Apa-apa lah.

Hari Raya pun dah dekat. Semua orang sibuk sana sini buat persiapan. Keluarga aku pun tak ketinggalan juga. Mama dengan langsir-langsirnya. Papa dengan rak bukunya yang baru. Aku? Aku macam tu lah.

Aku takde lah sibuk sangat buat persiapan, cuma sehari-sehari aku nak kemaskan bilik aku yang macam sarang tikus tu. Mama pun dah bising. Aku rasa aku kemaskan hujung minggu ni lah, aku janji kat diri aku.

Lagipun aku baru beli rak simpan baju yang baru. Kecik je. Tak pasang-pasang lagi. Itupun aku ingat nak pasang hujung minggu ni. Banyak betul aku kena buat hujung minggu ni yek.

Orang selalu cakap, bila time-time Raya ni kita jadi sentimental. Banyak teringat kat zaman dulu dan orang-orang yang sudah meninggalkan kita. Betul jugak tu. Aku teringat kalau Raya kat rumah Tok Chik dulu memang seronok. Semua orang dari KL balik rumah Tok Chik kat Rasah tu. Sekarang rumah tu dah takde dah. Dirobohkan sebab nak buat jalan besar. Orang-orang Kolumpo pun dah jarang balik sini. Aku tak salahkan mereka. Ye lah, masing-masing ada keluarga sendiri. Siapa aje yang tinggal kat Seremban ni.

Tapi Hari Raya tetap meriah. Keluarga mak aku besar. Jadi bila Raya, kita kunjung rumah masing-masing lah. Mungkin tahun ni kurang meriah kot, sebab Bang Dan tak balik tahun ni, Mak Yah sibuk dengan cucu baru dan Mak Jay nak beraya kat Terengganu.
Takpelah. Raya tetap Raya kan?

Tahun ni pun kali pertama keluarga kitorang sambut Hari Raya dengan ahli baru. Bang Fariz dan EE sambut Hari Raya kat Seremban tahun ni. Elok jugak EE raya kat sini. Sejak dia duduk kat Perlis ni, kengkadang tu sunyi jugak rumah. Kalau aku tak cakap dengan Mama, aku cakap dengan Papa. Kalau tak, aku cakap dengan kucing. Nasib baik kucing ada.

Tapi aku perasan tahun ni persiapan Raya aku tak semeriah tahun-tahun sebelumnya. Mungkin itu tanda aku dah semakin matang. Mungkin tidak. Aku masih suka tengok lawak-lawak Jackass lagi.

Entah lah.

Tahun ni aku tak beriya sangat kot berbanding sebelum ni. Lagu Raya aku main sekali dua je tahun ni. Selalunya, kalau minggu akhir sebelum Raya tu bergasak aku main koleksi MP3 Raya aku 24-7. Stesen radio pun aku tukar jugak. Aku rasa korang boleh agak stesen apa nak dengar kalau nak dengar lagu-lagu Melayu ni.

Sebenarnya bukan niat aku nak cerita persiapan Hari Raya aku tahun ni. Bagi aku, semua orang sambut dengan cara mereka sendiri. Sebab tu aku menyampah bila ada orang berkata, "Lahhh..kau raya macam tu je? Kitorang kalau Raya ni memang meriah gile."
Suka hati aku lah nak beraya macam mana pun. Aku nak menghabiskan Raya aku terperap depan TV mengadap rancangan Hari Raya Bersama Mawi sepanjang hari pun apa kau kisah. Janji aku happy.

Tapi di hari baik bulan baik ini, malas aku nak kutuk orang lebih-lebih. Aku pun banyak kekurangannya. Bagi aku lah, aku suka Hari Raya sebab masa tu kita teringat kat keluarga dan rakan-rakan rapat kita. Hari Raya untuk aku adalah tentang keluarga. Setakat ni aku belum gagal menghabiskan masa Hari Raya aku bersama keluarga. Aku harap keadaan itu tidak akan berubah. Aku ni sentimental sikit. Susah lah nak bayangkan aku berhari raya di tempat orang. Harap-harap tak payah sampai bila-bila.

Lagipun Hari Raya ni banyak memberi gambaran tentang diri kita sebenar.

Maaf lah kalau aku celoteh panjang sikit ari ni. Ye lahh...hari raya pun sekali setahun ye tak. Aku nak minta maaf banyak-banyak kepada semua yang sudi membaca blog aku yang tak seberapa ni. Kengkadang aku tau bahasa aku kasar sikit. Biasalah orang Negeri Sembilan memang camtu. Tapi aku tak berniat jahat.
Aku pun nak ucap Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri buat semua. Jaga diri di musim perayaan ni. Semoga kita berjumpa lagi Ramadhan akan datang. InsyaAllah.

Lemau

Overheard on the telly:

"That wraps up the top news of the hour. Have a productive Friday ahead."

On the last day of work before Raya, you're asking for too much, man.

Our Legacy

The burning question for the next 21 days would be:

What are you contributing to the Yahoo Time Capsule?

This unpaid advert was brought to you by someone who's a proud user of Yahoo! since 1997.
Before Google came along of course.

Friday to Sunday

Friday Night Lights certainly ranks up there alongside Any Given Sunday on my list of greatest sports films ever.
I love how the film portrays the winning obsession and culture in smalltown America. Which is the reality in sports today. You win, or you're just another footnote in history. Take note, FAM.
It's a far cry from the feel-good 'bunch of losers form a team that eventually prevails over the cocky favourites' as seen in Disney classics such as Mighty Ducks and Remember the Titans. I'm tired of the underdogs winning, because real life isn't that way.
I should know. I'm a Geordie.

See how good these people at Hollywood are? It's no coincidence that both films are about American football. I have yet to see a good footy film. Last year's Goal! wasn't much of a shout anyway. Green Street Hooligans was good, but it focused more on football fanatics rather than the game itself. Bend It Like Becks was a different topic altogether.
Thing is, it's how the story is told that makes it great. You could give them a takraw movie and they can turn it into some masterpiece. Whatever it is, sport is about passion and perseverance. If they can translate that onto the big screen, you have a great film on your hands.
Which struck me, I should make a badminton movie. The Sidek boys of course. Rosyam Nor as Misbun. Konpem!

Muat Turun

I'm a recently turned downloadaholic.
Which means I try to download everything under the sun.

Hmmm...I like this software. Download
I wanna read the original V for Vendetta graphic novel. Download.
I haven't watched that movie. Download.
I wonder how Paris Hilton.....nevermind.

By the way things are going, I'm Big Corporation's worse nightmare. But then, there's millions of people like me doing it as I'm typing this.
I just realised how powerful the Internet is today. This is the closest we've come to on-demand products since they invented pizza deliveries. Everything is at a click of a mouse. Remember that I was asking if anyone had a copy of Clerks a few weeks ago? Scrape that. It's downloading on my hard drive as we speak.
And I think I could apply to be a contributor for TV Guide this fall (macam lah aku kat US). I'm sampling a few brand new series, like Ugly Betty (which is an American version of Yo soy Betty la fea which I wasn't a big fan of) and my current favourite, Heroes. Okay okay I admit. I'm hooked on Heroes. The third episode is waiting for me at home, which explains my anxiety this afternoon. I guess I have this thing for people who want to save the world :P
Tonight's the pilot for 30 Rock in the States. And you can bet your bottom dollar it'll be in my hard drive by the end of the week. And since I have the time, why not try John Lithgow's new sitcom Twenty Good Years too?
And I thought Americans had all the fun on cable TV. With the Internet, I get all the network shows right here in good 'ol Seremban.
I really need a support group for this. Downloadaholic Anonymous anyone?

Democracy 101

Today, I registered myself as a voter.
Today, I feel powerful.

With one two strokes of the pen, I have the power to change governments.
Political candidates will bow to me.
Political parties will try to woo me.
Politicians will fight for me!

Which should be the case, really.
Which makes me wonder, why are they driving around in chauffeur-driven Benzes, while I'm stuck with a beat-up Proton?

I think it's called democracy.

Kopi-O

"With great power comes great responsibility."

Never has the immortal words from the pages of Spiderman ring so close to home. You won't see me swinging in the rooftops anytime soon but ever since I worked here, power is something that you get used to. And something that can easily be manipulated by those who desire. Which is not all that great for a nobody like me.
Why?
Because yesterday, somebody tried to give me an early Raya present.
I was so shocked, I'm still shaken by it today. How could I be so naive? Being in the position that I am, I've come to expect that one fine day, somebody somehow will try to bribe me. Omigod I said the B-word, didn't I?
I've always thought that I would be ready for that moment with a big NO with fists thumping on the table or throwing back the lump of cash right onto the face of the giver. Little did I know how unprepared I was when it finally came to me.
I felt angry, sad and disappointed all at the same time. Angry at myself for letting something like this happen to me. Angry at the fella for thinking I'm like 'the others'. I felt sad because he thought of me in the same light as the other no-good pieces of crap. Disappointed because he is the same race and religion as me, and on this Holy Month, he had the nerve to do something like that. He was also someone I just knew and was getting used to working with. In some ways, he betrayed me. And I feel gutted.
But on one hand, I sympathize him. This bothered me too. I don't know why, but I do. Maybe it's the Stockholm Syndrome kicking in. It's just that I thought, maybe it's not his fault. He's a businessman. He takes action in the interest of his company. So by offering me the 'gift', he was acting in the interest of his company. Or his fat ass. I don't know.
And probably it's just the way things are done here. You want it? You gotta fork out, man. Rules of the trade. Sorry fat-ass dude, those rules don't apply to me.
I'm bitterly disappointed because he didn't have to do this to get the job. I would have given it to him anyway based on his company and how they showed their effort in wanting it. Maybe he showed too much effort, I suppose.
Which brings me to the thought that this is the kind of sick reality of the world that we live in. It's so much easier to say 'Saya Anti-Rasuah' than actually doing it. Because unless you're in that situation, I guess nothing can prepare you to say No to that lump of paper.
Because in reality, walking the walk isn't just talking the talk.

Lanun

I downloaded my first movie off the Internet last weekend.
It was Lucky Number Slevin.

That's one small step for me, one giant leap for piracy.
